What Is a Grid Heater and Why Does Your Diesel Engine Need One?

A grid heater is a simple but powerful component designed to help diesel engines start in cold weather. Unlike gas engines, diesels don’t use spark plugs — they rely on compression and heat to ignite fuel. When temps drop, ignition can be tricky. That’s where the grid heater comes in.

It’s essentially a metal heating element (like a toaster) mounted in the intake manifold. When you start the engine, the grid heater kicks on and warms the incoming air, helping the engine fire up faster and run smoother in the first few minutes.

Grid heaters are most common in Cummins and other heavy-duty diesel engines. Some trucks use glow plugs, others use both. Either way, if your rig struggles on cold mornings, the grid heater is probably doing the heavy lifting.
